How to Start Reading Books if Your Attention Span is F*cked

The single greatest habit you should have if you want to be wise

So many people nowadays don’t even read (sad…)

Reading teaches you patience and persistence. You won’t be able to read a book fully in a day. It could take you weeks or months to finish one book.

However the knowledge you gain far surpasses that of experience. Books are timeless. They contain knowledge that can be used for the future. They contain concepts that remain relevant in the modern world.

People who think reading books are a joke - should look at the mirror because they they are the joke.

Action is not superior to knowledge. Action with knowledge is what makes you superior.

Action is what get things done. And knowledge helps you do it in the right way. If I suddenly tell you to fix a car and you’re not a mechanic - how would you do it? That’s right.

You would read about it. Research about it.

Knowledge is necessary. You might not use it today or tomorrow - but there will come a day that you won’t regret learning about it.

The first book I ever read was “Can’t Hurt Me” by David Goggin’s. The book itself was dark and fantastic at the same time.

It was unfiltered and truthful. Goggin’s didn’t hold back with his experiences. The trauma he’s suffered and the pain he’s gone through is unreal.

The man almost died multiple times trying to surpass his limitations. He’s truly built as the toughest man on earth.

But that’s not what I want to talk about. I want to portray about the lessons and intrinsic drive it gave me.

You see - as I was reading the book I didn’t know it was a best seller. Only when I finished reading the book I realized Goggin’s made millions out of it. And that’s because the message and story telling was powerful.

I remember being so immersed that I could remember specific details in each chapter.

I could remember how I spent hours journaling about the lessons I was left with the book. I could not forget. It just stuck in my mind.

Since then I’ve learned to love reading books. I don’t love every books but I sure do love reading ones I like.

And that leads us to the our first lesson.

Read what you love until you love reading

“The means of learning are abundant, it’s the desire to learn that’s scarce.”

-Naval Ravitkant

If you want to read while having f*cked up attention span - you need to read about what you love.

Reading textbooks and technical stuff will be boring to you if you love to draw.

Reading about math and derivations will be boring to you if you love psychology.

You see - in order to read - you need to read about what you loved.

The books I used to read were story books. As a child I’ve always been fascinated by art.

I used to draw almost everyday just to satisfy my desire to create art. And even now as an adult I still draw. I love drawing.

And that makes me think about the coloring books, story books I used to love reading when I was young. I would get bored over a book if - it looked flat or had no colors. And that makes sense.

I loved reading books I liked.

If you gave me a math textbook - I would’ve made a lot of doodles on it.

The modern education system forces us to read things about we don’t like. It forces us to memorize things we don’t need.

That’s why reading got boring. It became forced. Like a chore you have to do - not you want to do.

I love business. So most books I buy are business related.

The first book I would recommend you buying is “The Psychology of Money” I wrote an article about it a few months ago. You can read it here:

This book teaches you why people chase money out of validation not out of need.

Many people who dress to impress other people have poor relationships with money. That’s why they waste it on people who do not care about them.

Reading changes your perspective

  • It changes your mentality.

  • It changes the way you see people and respond to them.

  • It changes the way you think about the future and how you should acknowledge it.

Hunger for knowledge is good. Because knowledge is potentially applicable once you hit a a situation that is appropriate. It’s like equipping your mind with tools you can take out anytime you need it.

Before I read the book “The Psychology of Money” I used to hate people who would flaunt their money thinking they were stupid for wasting it.

Now that I’m better educated about that subject—I feel bad for them. I realized when they were young - they probably didn’t feel loved or seen by the people they care about.

That’s why - as an adult they try hard to be seen by people who only pretend to care about them - to soothe their inner child’s need for validation.

Reading changes the way you think. It makes you understand the reasoning behind many paradigms.

It makes you understand principles about the world as to why X led to Z result. It makes you understand why some people become great and why most stay average.

Read for knowledge not for vanity

When you read - you should not be flaunting how many books you’ve read. You should be there to improve your mentality and help you achieve better thinking patterns.

Not to flaunt to your friends that you’ve read that much. Most books are made for money not for knowledge. Many books are not worth reading.

They are merely made out of need and not out of want. And when that happens - the lessons contained inside the book become worthless. Timeless books are written for the purpose of wisdom distribution.

But most books are not written for that purpose.

Read to satisfy your curiosity

Reading about what you love never gets old. So when you buy books do not buy out of need - buy it out of love. When you read what you like as I mentioned above - you are more likely to read more books related to that book.

How to start reading

The following is the process I used to give myself the ability to stay consistent on reading.

  • Download a digital reading app- The one app I used before I started reading physical books were Deepstash. It’s an app that turns ideas into something like a powerpoint presentation. I’ve never bought a book at that time , so before I decided to invest my money, I thought to myself that I should first build the habit of reading. The reason I recommend reading by a digital app is because of summarization. You will be unlikely to stay consistent when reading physical books at first. So I recommend you first start by reading digitally summarized books by using apps. There are many apps like Deepstash so find one you like.

  • Reflection- After your reading sessions - build the habit of reflection. Build the habit of remembering the lessons you’ve learned. Build the habit of reflecting upon how you can use the lessons you’ve learned. Reading becomes more addicting once you realize how you can use that potential knowledge to increase your life quality.

  • Read at the same time everyday- When you read - also build the habit of reading at the same time everyday. This makes you build second nature and automatic habit building. I recommend reading early in the morning or in the afternoon.

  • Set limits- When you start reading, set a limit to how many pages you should read a day. Starting with 1 is a good You won’t last if you keep reading 10 pages a day if you’re new to reading books. Even reading 1 paragraph a day will help you build the habit. And that habit will one day snowball.

Books I recommend you read:

  • “The Psychology Of Money” - If you have poor relationship with money - you should start reading this book. This is underrated when it comes to explaining why people obsess about money and whey people spend it the way they do.

  • “How to Win Friends and Influence People” - Many who diss this book do not understand the value it brings. This one contains deep psychological insights many are oblivious into. If you read this book and apply it to your workplace - I guarantee that you will have it easier. Using this book in college is also a cheat code.

  • “Can’t Hurt Me” - While it’s more like a biography of David Goggin’s instead of insights about life - the rawdogging of how unfiltered it is takes one of the top spot on my reading lists. It’s timeless. While many books celebrate success on top of another - this book is raw. It’s not afraid to tell you how much life is willing to f*ck you up. It’s not afraid to tell you the trauma you can experience about life. It’s not afraid to tell you that life is hard and it’s not a beautiful rainbow and shineshine trip - but more like a walk through a battlefield.

Reading changes your mind. People who do not read books stay as who they are because they refuse to change their thinking.

That’s it.

See you next time
