Where to spend your time instead of wasting it.
If you have big ambitions but don't know where to start, read this
The biggest problem in the world right now with young men is they don't know where to spend their time. They don't know what to do and because they don't know what to do they end up doing nothing.
This is bad. What you should aim to do instead is to act and act even if it's leading nowhere.
Moving and working is better than stagnation. You don't need to figure out your mission in life right now. What you need instead is—act and get exposed to failure.
I've also wasted a lot of my time. I'm talking about 6-12 hours a day of consuming Facebook content.
I didn't know what to do like you. I spent my days consuming mindless content and stupid scripted funny videos.
I would laugh like I was happy inside—but deep down I knew I hated the current life I had.
I was always looking for things to improve my life. As someone who is always hungry for progress I couldn't stop but look and where to spend my time productively at the back of my head.
If that's you—today I will share 4 strategies I've done in the past when I was lost and didn't know what to do.
I also want to talk about this since most of the replies I received from my welcome email are "I don't know what to do" or "I know what to do but I can't do them".
In this letter let's give you a sense of clarity about what you should tackle and where to make progress at your current stage of life.
1) Build a Project
"The fastest way to make progress is to build something you want and learn how to build it"
Your project could be anything:
Your mind
Your body
Your personal business
Anything that takes time is a project.
And to build a project you need skills. And the fastest way to learn skills is to build a project where you have no choice but to learn the skills necessary to build it.
Let's take the example of your body.
If you're skinny fat or fat right now your current project is to lose weight and gain muscle.
In order for you to complete this project you need to understand how nutrition, rest and workout plans work.
My very first project I considered successful in my life is losing weight.
I was fat. I keep retelling this story but I weighed almost 85kg. I couldn't move properly and were getting mean looks everywhere I went.
If this is you—build your body.
Aim to reconstruct and build a physique you'd love to have. And while you're at it learn how energy, sleep and rest affects your body.
Just a few days ago I had a hard time writing my letters. I had brain fog and was lethargic.
I would write for 10 minutes and would struggle to keep going. Well that was to be expected. I've been sleeping 5 hours straight a night these past week.
So it had to happen.
What I really didn't like was the way I spent my time. I was mad at myself for wasting a lot of free time. I had time yet I couldn't do my work properly. I caught myself doom scrolling when I knew it was wasting time. I caught myself procrastinating more than usual.
I realized something was wrong (I was working too much).
The fix was simple. Sleep back to 8 hours a day and improve my energy levels. I did that. Now I'm here writing again.
What I want to tell you is that getting disciplined is much harder if you don't sleep properly and have a proper diet.
You will struggle to be consistent if you get energy crash outs during the day and have to nap. You will struggle to act and move when the first thing you do is scroll.
Using your time productively ultimately comes to down on how you spend your day to day life.
You are the architect of your life. The things around you are materials. Learn to use them to create the life you want.
To build a successful project—look inward and consider outside factors. There are a lot of considerations to take in.
Sleeping on time, eating a healthy diet and removing unnecessary stressors will increase your life quality by 4x. I can confirm.
2) Read
Not just books but anything.
Blogs, articles and newsletters.
The world's attention span is fried.
We're hitting an all time low thanks to short form and fast paced content. This makes you unable to focus.
And to get back your focus—you need to go back to reading. Reading is one dimensional.
There's no other stimuli other than your mind imagining the text you are reading.
Reading teaches you patience. Reading teaches you to understand. Reading teaches you to be stick and be consistent.
What matters is you are reading to regain your attention span. If you can't even read 200 words at once, then it means you've fried your attention span. Get it back.
Don't allow companies to hijack your emotions and life.
We are humans and humans are social animals. We are not meant to be isolated and be with ourselves 24/7 and all around the year.
When you have free time go outside your house, go to parks, go to a fitness park or a calisthenics park, a library or It can be a zoo, a mall or anywhere.
Then when you're outside—talk to people. Doesn't have to be strangers. Could be clerks, a random old lady or just anyone. Just get out of your house.
The more you stay isolated and alone—the more miserable you will become. Touching some grass helps in dealing with loneliness.
While you're at it go and make some friends
The best friendships always come unexpectedly. It comes from weird similar hobbies and likes.
Its not planned or structured.
It happens naturally and it clicks when two person with the same likes and values click.
You don't need to make a lot of friends but just a few you genuinely enjoy being around. It's a happy pill that you can have and is a great life quality improver.
3) YouTube
By far the most useful social media ever created is YouTube. There are thousands of free courses and mini guides available for consumption.
A simple search to find or work with something is enough to get you started. You'll just have to be patient. Since its free it means it won't be that high quality.
What I really like about this is Canva tutorials and video editing master classes
There's tons of free ones that you can immediately apply and play around with. YouTube is now the new Television.
Most people that watch TV are old people. After 20-30 years video consumption in social media sites will sky rocket. Even higher.
Take a look at children speaking other languages fluently because they've been exposed to it early using the internet—while we had to learn it the hard way.
If you don't know what to watch I recommend:
Self-improvement.
Long podcasts.
Series or master classes.
Look at this 2 hours long podcast by Andrew Huberman 3 years ago: https://youtu.be/Wcs2PFz5q6g?si=oJQOZ0jsE9kmu301 still a valuable find.
4) Invest in yourself
I'm talking about getting skills, honing your abilities and making your future self well off.
If you have more time than you can count—get some free online courses.
Coursera offers a lot of free ones. I completed one there when I was lost in the digital world.
If you have time and no money—use your time productively and invest in your skill set.
There's no loss in learning. You teach your self-discipline and patience. Which is what 70% of the world struggles with. If that's you—you can check out Live Intentionally: 90 Day Self-Improvement Program. It's a 90 day program designed to help you overcome your bad habits.
5) Do introspection: Practice Boredom
Learn to be bored and listen to your own thoughts. Your mind could be full of anger, envy, hate or self-loathing—but at the end of the day these demons that speak inside your mind are not real.
The reason so many people are miserable is because they keep running away from their mind.
I myself have been tortured by my mind when I was fat. Every day I would get reminded how fat I looked and the insults I received from other people.
I was close to being depressed because of the constant reminders I was receiving from my own brain.
What fixed this was the decision to change. I accepted the fact I was fat today but not in the future. I decided "I may be fat now but in a year or 2 I'll prove to myself I can change". And I made sure it happened.
(Add some pictures maybe some kilo or some picture I can just blur)
Being fat sucks and losing weight improved the way people treated me.
Looking at your inner self and fixing your inner problems is a huge investment you will never regret.
Action Plan
Now that you know what to do—your goal for this week is to choose 3 intentional activities and do them. Your goal is to act and get moving not aiming for perfection by moving.
If you still struggle to decide in what to do—then do this:
Buy 1 book that you like. Doesn't have to be non-fiction; it could be a novel or a story book. Anything just get back to reading and not consuming short form content.
Spend 1 hour today sitting in silence. This will be hard and many of you will quit. As you sit in silence, don't believe your thoughts. Just let it flow and don't judge. The goal here is to get used to you listening to your own mind.
Call a friend or family. Socialize again and get started. Your social skills improve the more you practice it. So talk to people. It doesn't matter if you fumble, just do it again and again until you get it right.
That's it.
See you next time,
-Noat
