Why You Procrastinate Even When You Don't Want To
If you don't know why you keep wasting time, give this a read
Today's letter is practical.
After writing philosophical letters I know most of you have struggled to understand the meaning behind the way I structure my words and sentences.
In any case the point is not to understand—but to learn. Understanding comes later. Learning is knowing.
So today I'll give you a practical letter about why and what procrastination is all about.
Let's start—
Procrastination simply put is: "doing other things to waste time instead of confronting what you should really be doing".
"Just do it advice" works however mental disorders, bad mental health and other cognitive patterns exist so we can't just fully ignore them.
In this case I'd like to tackle a different side of procrastination.
It'll be about your self-image and your beliefs.
But first let's understand why procrastination happens.
1) "I'm just a lazy person"
I don't know if it's just people being stupid but I hear men being proud when they sleep late and masturbate 3 times a day like it's an achievement worth talking about to their friends.
Society has become weak to the point—we can openly talk about our shortcomings and no one will call us out for it.
We can talk shit on the internet and get away with it.
We can roast someone else and destroy their entire confidence until they die—and get away from it unharmed.
So why am I talking about stuff that is unrelated to procrastination?
YOU LACK CONSEQUENCES.
That's right. You can spend all day and all night watching porn and wasting time and no one will call you out for it.
And when no one calls you out for it—it becomes a habit. When it becomes a habit—it becomes repetitive. When it becomes repetitive—it becomes your identity.
Do you see what I mean?
When you call yourself "I'm just a lazy person" or "I don't feel like doing it right now" means you don't realize the consequences.
You don't understand eating junk food straight for a year will destroy your intestines. You don't understand not working out will make you fat and unattractive in your 30's.
Most people do not know the consequences of being undisciplined. So they are fine being lazy and procrastinating all day.
If you want to change you have to understand what will happen if you stay the same.
2) Emotional Avoidance
We are creatures of conformity. We avoid negative emotions even when it makes our life worse.
We continue to delay our feelings not realizing it will get worse and worse when we neglect unmanaged emotions.
So we continue to believe it's alright to delay our work even when it's not.
Man fear emotions. Because emotions are like demons. They are blunt and honest.
Your emotions don't give fuck if you're having a hard time or at your wits end.
And most people can't handle the pressure of emotions even if the said emotions comes from them.
We like to be logical but at the end of the day—we are also creatures of emotion. Never forget that fact.
3) Stress
Let's be honest.
Most people work jobs they hate and work for people who don't even appreciate them.
What makes you think they'll be happy to work hard and put overtime in their work? NONE.
I've specifically witnessed tyrant bosses and employees who have no choice but to follow.
Well guess what? They hate working especially if it's someone who have never appreciated them.
Are they happy?
NO.
Of course not.
Of course they'll be stressed.
So before you blame yourself and always accuse it's you being lazy.
Take a hard look at your life first. It might be that you're too stressed to act and think clearly.
I talked about this in the letter titled: Signs You've Hit Burnout And How To Recover
Give it a read if you feel like you're too stressed in life right now.
4) Short Term Thinking
We are conformists by nature. I already said this—so instead of looking ahead to the future and having better results—we like to do what brings us immediate pleasure.
And anything that takes time we often disregard and like to pass. We like fast and easy results. Not time consuming commitments.
Just go search online and you'll see people asking: "What's the fastest way to make money" or "Any hacks to get over procrastination fast"
Take note of the words "fast" and "hacks".
The truth is there are no hacks with permanent results.
Tips and tricks may work—but only for a day—week or month.
They will never last into years of work and consistency.
There are no tips and tricks to overcome things easily. There might be helpful and useful tips—however if you don't solve the root cause you will continue to suffer.
So fix your mindset. Things never come easily.
I worked on twitter for over a year and started over. I failed my first newsletter. I failed 2 twitter accounts in total. I gave up over 2 years worth of hard work and decided to try on reddit.
And I've never regretted my decisions.
Always think long term. To win you have to expand your vision and think widely. I'll also write a letter about this if you're interested.
Reply "vision" if you want me to tackle how to build a strong mindset.
5) Low Motivation
Despite popular belief about how motivation doesn't matter—it does.
Many people lack motivation because they all look for it in the wrong places.
They work hard because of a girl, a luxurious car, getting rich to impress people who don't care about them—of course you'll be unmotivated—because your reason to overcome procrastination is weak. Very weak.
Just imagine holding on to that special someone who doesn't even know you exist. Weak and shaky. Could break anytime and it will break.
Weakness comes from weak reasons. And using women and cars to motivate you is indeed weak.
A strong cause for motivation to overcome procrastination—is to help your family and retire your Mother.
If you don't understand just how precious having a Mother is read this letter: “10 Brutal Truths Men Learn Too Late in Life” I talked about how your Mother is the only woman who will love you unconditionally.
Strong motivation results in strong drive and consistency. And weak motivation leads to weak results and discipline.
Personally I've been able to overcome procrastination purely because of desire. Seeing your parents struggle to make ends meet is painful—so it's been in my mind ever since I was a child that I'll get rich no matter what it takes. And getting rich requires discipline.
Weak motivation doesn't work. You need to "find out why" you're working hard or you'll keep wasting time.
6) Blaming Yourself
Blaming yourself for something that has already happened will not help.
Blaming yourself for wasting a lot of time will not help you.
Blaming yourself you for not taking that opportunity is pointless.
Blaming yourself why you didn't do what you said you'd do is useless.
Many people live in the past. Because of that they neglect the present.
They don't understand holding onto the past will only build up negative emotions.
That's something most people do. And they don't even realize it.
A lot of people are not present. They keep replaying events and memories in the past even when it's been months or years.
And as a result—they never make progress.
I don't want that someone to be you.
How To Overcome Procrastination in 3 Simple Steps.
Becoming consistent is simple not easy. This is a fact most people forget.
Simple because "just do it" works and not easy because "you've trained yourself to be lazy".
Step 1: Understand Your Needs
Well actually if you are fine and normally healthy you'll be able to do things without problems. If you can't then—its most likely because you are not healthy.
Is your mental health alright?
Are you stressed at work?
Are you having a hard time?
You have to ask yourself questions and be able to understand what's wrong with you.
Most people don't even bother with self-reflection. They just want the tips and tricks that will only last for a month.
Because self-reflection isn't kind. You have to face parts of yourself that you don't like.
Parts that you hate. Actions you've regretted doing.
And tips and tricks are like putting band aids in a wound that requires surgery.
Self-reflection is a rehabilitation for your mind. To be able to see who you are and what you need without judgements.
Many people are afraid to be alone because they fear the words and thoughts that they hear from themselves. They are aware of their faults and wrongdoings but don't have the conviction to accept it.
Running away from what you have to fix will only make it worse. It's like cancer—the earlier you treat it the higher your chances of living.
Understand: Self-reflection is a vital tool to understand what you really want and need which represents a mirror that will reflect who you really as a person. Because—people who've never done self-reflection see a blurry face when they look at themselves and asks—"who is this?".
Step 2: Identity
What you think about yourself matters. You must be able to think you can overcome procrastination.
You must have the belief you can become disciplined. In the letter: "Why Being Rich is Good" I explained how having the belief that you can get rich is the same as having the belief you can lose weight.
Identity is an integral part of life. By integral I mean necessary as a need. Everyone has identities.
The problem is most people cannot tell which is their identity. And since they cannot decide which identity they want—they let other people decide.
Do you get what I mean?
Your belief that you're lazy person might have not originated from your thoughts but from someone else.
Self-image is a big part of discipline. If you see yourself as someone who is weak and often waste time—you'll start acting weak and waste time.
What you feed your mind—is what you will do and act. Because the subconscious only follows when the conscious is taking charge.
Anyways if this doesn't make sense it's cool. I didn't understand this before either.
We can discuss it later in the newest letters.
3) Learn To Handle Pressure
No offense but I find it weak when people cry at job interviews.
And I know the reason. Because the modern world lifestyle is comfortable.
We can instruct machines to do work for us—we can hire maids that will cook, wash our clothes and clean our dishes.
We can spend all day inside our homes yet never get bored from stimulation.
The modern world is designed to make you weak. And as a result you've become weak.
It's true. Because I've experienced it myself. And not just me—I've seen it from people around me.
Laying down after eating.
Eating snacks after dinner.
Watching YT shorts/reels while talking to someone else.
But back then our parents couldn't afford to just sit around and wait for someone else to feed them.
They get kicked out of the house—have to find jobs to support their family and have to work young.
The modern world has entitled brats and adults. And as a result they've—become arrogant enough to misunderstand that everyone owes them something.
You might think this is not related but the more arrogant and entitled you are—the weaker your tolerance to stress.
Because truly strong and capable people do not complain and if they want something they act and get it—not wait for someone else to hand it over to them.
That's right.
I'm telling you to take responsibility and solve your own problems.
The first step to handling pressure is being able to confront your own personal problems and solve it.
That's the first step.
And that's all for this week. Hope you had a good read.
See you next time,
-Noat
